PTC Applauds Apple CEO for Anti-Porn Promise

In recent months, the Parents Television Council has alerted parents to the availability of sexually explicit “apps,” or programs, which can be purchased and viewed on Apple’s new mobile iPhone and iPad devices. The iPhone in particular is wildly popular among teenagers; and Apple hopes to market the iPad to schools as an aid to education. Since the devices are designed to operate anywhere, it is nearly impossible for parents to monitor what their children are seeing.

The PTC has been outspoken in its calls for greater corporate responsibility on the part of Apple. In response, Apple began removing many of the explicit programs from its “App Store,” and launched a vigorous review of programs being proposed for sale there.

Though Apple’s actions are no different than those of a bookshop or convenience store owner who declines to sell Playboy, some have claimed that this responsible behavior on the part of Apple is a pernicious limit on consumer “freedom,” and that requests that pornography not be made available to school children equal “censorship.”

In particular, one frustrated consumer wrote a scathing e-mail to Apple’s co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs, who often responds to customer mail personally. In his letter, the customer complained that “Apple’s role isn’t moral police.” Jobs replied, “We do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone. Folks who want porn can buy an Android” [a competing brand of mobile phone]. And in a previous statement in April, Jobs told technology reporters, “You know, there's a porn store for Android. You can download nothing but porn. You can download porn. Your kids can download porn. That's a place we don't want to go - so we're not going to go there."

The Apple CEO can expect further criticism from fans of pornography; but the PTC applauds Steve Jobs for his bold and courageous stance in favor of promoting decency and protecting children.
