Secret Fashion Show has once again managed to deliver some of the most
demeaning and pointless holiday programming imaginable. Degrading imagery,
themes of bondage, nods to voyeurism and fantasies of teenage girls dominate
this tasteless production. It aired December 5th on CBS.
The show opens with
Justin Timberlake performing his hit song "Sexyback," while women dance
seductively in boxes that form the backdrop for the peep show to come.
While preparing for
the runway, a model wearing a leather dog collar with a large ring dangling from
it frets about the possible mishaps that could occur while she is parading
around wearing only her underwear. Meanwhile onstage, a model stomps down the
runway wearing a large key around her neck. On her underpants, a padlock has
been embroidered in sequins. Throughout the entire first segment models parade
around wearing the same lingerie the store carries throughout the year but
covered by strange overlays constructed of metal, chains and straps.
Victoria's Secret's ‘Pink' line is geared towards young women between the ages
of 18 and 22. However, the segment that showcases it looks as though it is
intended for girls who have yet to get their drivers licenses. On the runway,
models are dressed as not-so-subtle tributes to the kinds of dates a teenager
would go on. One model is dressed as a box of popcorn and carries a bottle of
soda while another model has what looks like a picnic blanket tied to her
lingerie. It also pays homage to a teenager's hobbies and ambitions. One model
is dressed as a cheerleader while another carries a glittery electric guitar. To
top off the segment, a model dressed in graduation regalia struts down the
runway to illustrate the rite de passage of every high-schooler.
So many negative
images of women are offered up to audiences every day. It's far easier to cause
a sensation by letting women be depicted as objects all in the name of innocent
fun than to consider the greater good of society and the women who make up more
than half of it. For continuing to assume that these are the images American's
want to be fed the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is our Worst of
